Adherence assays and Slime production of Vibrio alginolyticus and Vibrio parahaemolyticus BJM

In this study we investigated the phenotypic slime production of Vibrio alginolyticus and Vibrio parahaemolyticus strains, food-borne pathogens, using a Congo red agar plate assay. Furthermore, we studied their ability to adhere to abiotic surfaces and Vero cells line. Our results showed that only V. alginolyticus ATCC 17749 was a slime-producer developing almost black colonies on Congo red agar plate. Adherence to glace tube showed that all V. alginolyticus strains were more adherent than V. parahaemolyticus. Only V. alginolyticus ATCC 17749 was found to be able to form biofilm on polystyrene microplate wells (OD570 = 0.532). Adherence to Vero cells showed that all tested strains were non adherent after 30 min, however after 60 min all the studied strains...

Probiotic effect of FLOC on Vibrios in the pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus Vannamei ArchiMer

The advantages of FLOC over clear water (CW) in rearing juvenile L. vannamei and its effects on Vibrio communities were evaluated. Survival rate in FLOC and clear water were recorded and a probiotic was tested under both conditions. Daily growth rate (DGR) was higher in FLOC (p < 0.05) than in CW. Survival in each system increased significantly when a probiotic was included in the diet (p < 0.05). The Vibrionaceae community from the hepatopancreas (HP) and the culture medium did not differ between the two culture media. Infection dynamics of a V. splendidus strain pathogenic to Mytilus edulis : In vivo and in vitro interactions with hemocytes ArchiMer

The pathogenic strain V. splendidus 10/068 1T1 has previously been reported for its virulence to the blue mussel and for its capacity to alter immune responses. In this study, we expanded the knowledge on hemocyte-pathogen interactions by using in vitro and in vivo assays. V. splendidus 10/068 1T1 severely inhibited cell adhesion and acidic vacuole formation unlike the innocuous phylogenetically related V. splendidus 12/056 M24T1 which had no effect on these cell functions. Isolement et identification de vibrions halophiles d'une station experimentale de mariculture ArchiMer

110 Vibrio strains were isolated, at various times of the year, from samples of sea-water supply, breeding-tank water and discarded fish used as food at the breeding stations. From the results obtained by the biochemical and cultural tests, it was possible to identify most of the isolated strains as Vibrio anguillarum . Strains with intermediate characteristics, above-all positive saccharose, proved to be numerous. The authors discuss the occurrence, in particular environments such as those being studied, of atypical or intermediate vibrio strains which are difficult to classify.

Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Vibrio vulnificus and Vibrio cholerae are human pathogens. Little is known about these Vibrio spp. in the coastal lagoons of France. Development of an antiseptic procedure to improve retention rates during the grafting process of black-lip oyster, Pinctada margaritifera ArchiMer

In French Polynesia, black pearl cultivation now takes place on about 30 of the 118 atolls or islands. This activity has largely replaced copra, coconut oil and fishing as a source of income. Around 1,000 pearl farms, generally small ones of less than 5 ha, are registered. The pearl farms are mainly owned by families. In 1998, about 7,000 persons were employed in theentire pearl industry, from production to retailing. In value, this activity represents the first exportation of French Polynesian products. From 1988 to date, exports increased exponentially before leveling. Starting with less than two kilograms in 1972, exports have now stabilized at Il tons of "black" pearls.

Highly diverse recombining populations of Vibrio cholerae and Vibrio parahaemolyticus in French Mediterranean coastal lagoons ArchiMer

Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio cholerae are ubiquitous to estuarine and marine environments. Thes two species found in Mediterranean coastal systems can induce infection in humans. Environmental isolates of V. cholerae (n = 109) and V. parahaemotycius (n = 89) sampled at different dates, stations and water salinities were investigated for virulence genes and by a mutilocus sequence-based analysis (MLSA). Polyphasic analysis of five new Vibrio isolates originating from the haernolymph of diseased cultured oysters is described.
